Design Something Everyday 20/365: Star Wars Kids

Apr 15, 2010   //   by Devlin   //   Blog, Uncategorized  //  No Comments

When I was growing up I loved watching cartoons, I still do, but their power seemed much more intimate when I was younger. I watched all sorts, but I began to notice that an entire sub-genre of cartoons became all the rage when I was growing up. It would take  a popular series and re-imagine the characters as either babies or children. I remember thinking that this was rather odd. Perhaps it was my first burst of critical thinking about pop culture.

One example of this sub-genre that I always found particularly weird was the show The Muppet Babies. Imagine the infantilizing of Jim Henson’s brilliant Muppets as diaper clad t0ddlers. Many of my friends enjoyed it,  finding it irreverent, but I always found it rather creepy.

In this vein, I imagined what “Star Wars Kids” would’ve been like. It’s Luke Skywalker embellished with a Wiki Commons image of the home world of the irascible Skywalker clan, Tatooine.

In case you’re wondering here’s the Muppet Babies, in all their glory (please note the Star Wars reference  at the :16 mark, talk about synergy!):

The typeface is PR Agamemnon Bold, Top Lining. A cool typeface, I’m quite font of. Created by the talented designer Peter Rempel.  You can download the font at da Font.

Design Something Every Day 17/365: Shavuot Icons

Apr 13, 2010   //   by Devlin   //   Blog, Uncategorized  //  No Comments

This design is part of a poster I created promoting a Shavuot service held at Temple De Hirsch Sinai. Each of the icons in the poster are symbolic of some facet of the holiday. For example, the agricultural and harvest symbols represent that aspect of the “Festival of Weeks.”

The Essential Approach to Masking with Deke McClelland

Apr 7, 2010   //   by Devlin   //   Blog, Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Masking an image is one of the most difficult things to do convincingly in Photoshop. If you are interested in effective masking techniques, you need to watch this video! In it you will be guided by PhotoShop guru Deke McClelland and given the best principles for masking in PhotoShop. It’s almost like an entire lynda.com course in 29 min. Most surprisingly you’ll discover that the most powerful principle of  masking is not “dopey selection tools,” but:

…the art of having an image select itself.

If you don’t believe me, watch Master Deke and be amazed…

This video is an oldie but a goody, and came from Photoshop Guru Deke McClelland being guest blogger for fellow  Guru Scott Kelby on his great blog about all things Photoshop scottkelby.com.
