Tron, with duct tape!

Aug 25, 2011   //   by Devlin   //   Blog  //  No Comments

This is the coolest thing I have seen in a long time! As a fan of Tron and animation I loved this, but more importantly, as a fan of internet memes I have to say the ending is priceless.

The power of video should not be taken lightly by any marketer. If you have any doubts, check out these stats:

The “Duck Tron” video went live on Sunday and had 20,000 views yesterday around noon Eastern Time. Then Vimeo’s film-savvy audience started taking notice, although earned media certainly helped. At 4 p.m., the brand posted a message about the video to its formidable Facebook audience of 4.3 million and tweeted to its 1,900 Twitter followers. It currently stands at 288,000 Vimeo views, while approaching 6,000 on YouTube.” — source: ClickZ.com

I hadn’t heard of Duck Brand duct tape before, but you can be sure I’ll remember it now. To quote the great philosopher Darth Vader, “Impressive, most impressive.”

Photoshop helps the Hubble!

Aug 15, 2011   //   by Devlin   //   Blog  //  No Comments

I saw this great video on Boing Boing and I had to share. A brief video showing how PhotoShop helps create all those great Hubble images of the universe. It reminds me of a line from the Manifesto of the Constructivist Group from 1922:

PREVIOUSLY: Engineers relaxed with art
NOW-Artists relax with technology

Great Read: Graphic Design Cookbook

Aug 2, 2011   //   by Devlin   //   Blog  //  No Comments

To be fair Graphic Design Cookbook: Mix & Match Recipes for  Faster, Better Layouts by Leonard Koren and R. Wippo Meckler is more of a resource than a read actually, but what a resource it is! As the title suggests the book is a visual cookbook for coming up with quick and effective layouts for any purpose. Pick this book up if you have creative block; using the ideas in this book can get your creative juices flowing again!

The book is broken into five parts, each section having many ideas for brainstorming new, interesting and solid design solutions. To create an interesting new design in a hurry, think about what you you are trying to communicate and then find inspirations in the book’s five sections:

  • Structuring Space — basic page structure
  • Orienting on the Page — headers and pagination systems
  • Text Systems — text box ideas
  • Ordering Information — grids
  • Pictorial Considerations — image ideas
