If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time you’ll notice I am a big fan of the stock photo/illustration/font site Veer. They have great resources for all designers. They also have produced some outstanding videos. For today’s Typography Tuesday I’d like to share 3 great tutorials they have produced for working with fonts.

10 Best Video Series on the Internet for Self Education

Jan 30, 2012   //   by Devlin   //   Blog  //  No Comments

The internet is an amazing resource for learning new things. If you want to put in the time, there are many great things you can learn. The following are ten great free video series that you should really check out.

These are sites and series that I regularly watch, so it is a personal list. Hence the rather random, nature of the subjects. I am very curious about pretty much everything from my profession of graphic design to science to pop culture to religion. You’ll have to forgive the rather scattered nature of the list, but I personally attest to the greatness of each of the listed shows.

TED: Technology, Education and Design

The greatest collection of experts waxing poetic on their fields. A must watch for anyone.

The Periodic Table of Videos

Video Journalist Brady Haran creates videos about chemistry.

Sixty Symbols

Video Journalist Brady Haran creates videos about physics.

Bibledex

Bibledex is a project by the University of Nottingham’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies in conjunction with video journalist Brady Haran. The videos are by no means comprehensive — rather they’re a curious assortment of academic insights into what is probably the most famous collection of books in history.

Backstage Science

Great videos about science by Brady Haran.

Deke’s Techniques

Deke McCellan is my PhotoShop hero. I find him the most entertaining and excellent teacher of digital communication tools ever. Here are different sites to check out this great series:
blog.lynda.com/tag/dekes-techniques/
deke.com/
youtube.com/user/lynda

InDesign Secrets Video Cast

Quick tips on secrets from the masters of InDesign. A must for anyone working in publications design.

Global Public Square with Fareed Zakaria

My favorite living intellectual and political thinker has an amazing show on CNN which is broadcast on the internet. His show is what news should be, a thoughtful examination of events and issues with the leaders and great thinkers.

Ontwink

A great resource for web designers and devlopers. It is a repository for talks on the technical side of design.

Watch Free Documentary

A collection of great non-fiction films. Though I would quibble the site about many of the pseudo-science and conspiratorial bent of many of the documentaries. So buyer beware on some of them.

Extra Series to check out!

After Hours on cracked.com

I had one extra one, it is more a humorous look at popular culture. I am not sure if it belongs with the other videos in this list, but I highly recommend it.

Good Read: Slide:ology by Nancy Duarte

Jan 25, 2012   //   by Devlin   //   Blog  //  No Comments

This week’s installment of good reads, you should check out slide:ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations by Nancy Duarte. I’ve talked a lot about Nancy Duarte and her amazing design work with her company Duarte Design and for good reason. Her group is showing all of us what can be done with most people think is a terribly boring task, presentation design.  Her work is truly a revelation.

I highly and heartily recommend this book, it shows you the best principles for designing great looking, well organized and most importantly effective presentations. The hardest part about this book is that once you start reading it is putting it down.

For this installment of Typography Tuesday I had to share Veer Presents: “Go Wild With Open Type.” This clever ad mixes some of my favorite things, fonts, mid-century modern esthetic and clever production. Fantastic!

Go Wild With OpenType” is the third in a series of retro science films about fonts, from Veer. In this installment, the narrator explains OpenType technology, the man benefits of OpenType fonts, and how to access their special features and expanded character sets.

How They Did It — Ed Emberley Edition

Jan 22, 2012   //   by Devlin   //   Blog  //  No Comments

For this week’s How They Did It, I had to share another great gem from Lynda.com. They have produced a fantastic documentary about artist and author Ed Emberley. He is an icon for children and adults around the world. I love his books and they are an inspiration to all artists of all ages.

Watch more at http://www.lynda.com/tutorial/86560?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=viral&a…

Award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Ed Emberley is truly a national treasure, having drawn nearly 100 books. The warmth of his family and his 17th century home are an essential part of his work. In this installment of the lynda.com flagship documentary series, we go to Ed’s home in Ipswich, Massachusetts, to meet him and all of the members of his talented family, including his wife and author, Barbara; children, illustrators Rebecca and Michael; and granddaughter, recording artist Adrian Emberley. A generation of children have learned to draw using Ed’s drawing books and we watch as a new generation puts crayon to paper. At 80 years young, Ed is pushing ahead and we meet with his team as he works on his newest iPad app—with graphic artists that, as children, learned to draw with his books.
