13 Days of Halloween: It Came from the Desert
Similar to yesterday’s post about TSR’s They’ve Invaded Pleasantville, another game in the same genre included Cinemaware’s It Came from the Desert (1989). It is more or less a pastiche of the classic 1954 film THEM! In the film it is nuclear testing that mutates ants so they become gigantic and are a threat to all humanity. In this game it is a meteor that causes the mutation, but basically the same premise.
I love THEM! So getting to getting to, more or less, play a role in that universe was so much fun. You played a scientist who is trying to convince the towns folk the threat is real and eradicate it before it’s too late. Just like They’ve Invaded Pleasantville.
It Came From the Desert wasn’t a boardgame this was a classic great computer game. The graphics were pretty great for 1989 and it was surprisingly hard to beat. Here’s a pretty fun long play video if you want a sense of the game and how it was played.
It was even turned it into a film, which I didn’t know about until I started writing this post!! Now I know what I’m doing tonight! So funny a movie inspires a game that inspires a movie! Full circle!
