The Night Cage
One of the most interesting games that’s hit the table recently is Christopher Ryan Chan, Chris McMahon, and Rosswell Saunders’ amazing game The Night Cage. The idea is you’re a person who wakes up in a dark horror filled maze and you only have a candle to light the way. The mechanic that you can only have visibility one square away is very interesting.
Like all great games, the theme adds to the enjoyment. The Night Cage is reminiscent of the 1997 film The Cube or Chuck Palahniuk’s Haunted in it’s feeling of unease and existential dread. Definitely one well have to try again, mostly because so far, we’ve never escaped the night cage which is how you win. It’s a cooperative game, but it’d be interesting if there was some way to add it a way a player could win individually to add in a hint of paranoia. Not sure if that’d hurt or help the game.
