Rest in Peace Sonics Guy

I was in the SODO area of Seattle the other day and saw the poignant mural commemorating the life of local legend Kris Brannon, the “Sonic’s Guy.” I had to pull over and get out to pay my respects. It is somber, yet full of his spirit. If you happen to be in Seattle and make it down to SODO go check out the mural on 1st Ave. S., just south of T-Mobile Park. It’s a great mural created by the fantastic artist Jeff Jacobson. He’s really done an amazing job of capturing the essence of this unique man.

If you aren’t familiar with the mural or the Sonics Guy this is a good report about it from King 5. Kris was one of the many basketball fans in the Seattle area who were devastated when the NBA basketball team, the Seattle Supersonics were moved to Oklahoma City by the evil carpet baggers lead by Clay Bennett and enabled by the NBA leadership. Becoming the team that must not be named. As I’ve said before sports are important, and Kris took his anger and sadness and channeled it into action, being one of the most visible and positive people trying to do what they could to return a NBA team to the emerald city.

Unfortunately he passed away earlier this year leaving a 6 foot 5 hole in the local sports scene. I never met Kris, but his love of the long lost Seattle Supersoincs was contagious and his enthusiasm was contagious every time I saw him testifying in front of local politicians or being interviewed by the media.

Hopefully the Sonics will play again in Seattle, and surely Kris will be smiling from above. Rest in peace Sonics Guy.
