Follow Socialist Modernism on Instagram

Thought I’d share one of my favorite feeds on Instagram, Socialist Modernism. A great feed that is used to create an interactive map that gives the context, history and ultimately meant to preserve Soviet Modernist architecture before it is lost. It is a project created by BACUBirou pentru Art? ?i Cercetare Urban? (Bureau for Art and Urban Research) in Romania. If you like it, please think about supporting the project. But please check out the feed, it is really great.

I can’t do the project justice about why they are doing it, from their website:

Socialist Modernism – is an initiative developed by BACUBirou pentru Art? ?i Cercetare Urban? (Bureau for Art and Urban Research). Our approach is focused on protection of built heritage and the research within the borders of the former Eastern bloc, we advocate for the protection of the Socialist Modernism architecture erected in the period between 1955-91. We are dealing with the protection / monitoring / research / preservation of the current state of those cities, including the buildings, monuments, parks, squares, entire districts and green areas, etc. In the first phase of this project we will concentrate on the analysis / research / study, followed by the second phase, when we will elaborate regulations and will deal with education of local authorities and inhabitants of those protected areas, through a legislative program concerning the architectural stylistics of the buildings/districts erected in socialist era.

B.A.C.U. Association invites architects, urban planners, artists, activists, historians and anyone interested to contribute and help grow the platforms. Send us any information regarding neighbourhoods, buildings, monuments, parks or any other relevant architectural elements – please don’t forget to mention their address – or post them on your personal FB, Tumblr, Instagram, Twiter, etc. page using the hashtag #SOCIALISTMODERNISM

All information thus collected will be published on our website and included in an interactive map under the name of the contributor.

Here are a few of the photos on the feed I really like.
